Multiple Family Travels to and from the US

Hier tauschten Kathy, James, Robert, Jürgen und Kathy bei einem
leckerenitalienischen Essen die neusten Familiengeschichten aus.

Last January, while planning a business trip to Detroit, Michigan, member Jürgen checked in with member Robert, who was very pleased about seeing each other again after six years. Spontaneously, he organized a small Dettling get-together and invited Jürgen to an eventual
dinner.

During that later Italian dinner, Kathy, James, Robert, Jürgen and Carol were happily able to exchange family stories.

For Robert, Andrea had sent along some excerpts from our Dettling Data Bank that show the relationship between Jürgen’s and Robert’s ancestors.

A further business trip in June provided the next opportunity to exchange information when Robert invited Jürgen to his home. This time, Tim and Luciana were also present for a tasty chicken dish prepared by Carol, during which they quietly celebration a relaxed get-together.

Soon after, in September Jürgen and Andrea were able to return the favor by hosting our American friends during their trip to Europe. Andrea happily insisted on arranging a varied and interesting three-day program in Southwest Germany. Right after the guests had checked in at the Hotel Kerzenstüble in Gärtringen, an excursion to the university town of Tübingen followed.

While walking through the area, the guests were able to admire the impressive view from Schloss Hohentübingen as well as the striking market plaza and the many narrow streets with their half-timbered houses. And at the Stiftskircheck they even enjoyed a piano concert.

Bob was especially taken with the old antique stores. After taking in a view of the Hölderlin Tower from a bridge across the Neckar, the group returned to Gärtringen for a Schwabian supper at the home of Jürgen and Andrea.

image06On Friday, Robert, Carol, James and Kathy drove to the Vogts Farmyards to take in more of the beautiful Black Forest.

On the way back, they met relatives from Salzstertten at the Café in Lützenhard, to which they had been invited to by Siegfried and Anna Luise. Jürgen, Andrea, Gerhard, Kathrin and Siegfired’s daughter had also arrived, and all enjoyed an evening of relaxed conversation in English and German. A look at family trees turned up the fact that the American guests are third cousins of Anna Luise.

On Saturday, Jürgen and Andrea showed the guests around the Schwäbische Alb and an especially beautiful excursion goal, the Lichtenstein Castle and its wonderful views.
After a guided tour of the castle and lunch in the Forellenhof Rössle in Honau, we continued on to Zweifalten, where by pure coincidence a historical beer fest was taking
place, accompanied by the brew master’s explanation of the beer making process and, of course, a beer tasting. For this descendant of a brew master from Salzstetten, this was a special highlight.

On the way back, we looked in on the legendary and fabled Blautopf in Blaubeuren before rounding out the day by partaking of a tasty evening meal of Schnitzel at Andrea’s.

Following the final evening, spent in the Böblingen Meilenwerk, Robert, Carol, James, and Kathy continued their trip toward Italy, where they intended to visit maternal-side relatives.
