Meeting of Descendants of the Odessa Line

stammbaum01On October 8, Diana Buckley-Dettling and husband John traveled to Germany from Texas to get to know ancestral places of places of origin and meet with Andrea and Jürgen. They had completed a Baltic Sea cruise and had originally planned to travel south by train. But because Jürgen and Andrea happened to be in Hamburg that weekend, they got together right there. Following lunch at the port landing stages under glorious sunshine, they set out together
southward by car. During the long drive, they took advantage of the time together to talk about their families. The last time they had seen each other was in San Francisco in 2012.

The following day they went on a drive to the Hohenzollern Castle. Unfortunately, patches of fog dimmed the views considerably. Nevertheless, we enjoyed a dry-weather guided tour of the castle and on the way back visited the villages of Dettlingen and Salzstetten. In addition to touring the Salzstetten Schlössle, we also saw the church in Dettlingen. There we discovered the new church guide book that Karl-Josef had put together.

During the last day we were fortunate to experience a spur-of-the-moment meeting with Nikodemus Heinz in the center of Stuttgart. Niko had brought along some documentation from his own family research, which made it possible to clear up a few open questions. We sat comfortably together in the Café at the Stuttgart Schlossplatz, sipped coffee and ate cake. We parted only after common ancestors and relatives between Niko and Diana had been identified. The time passed all too quickly, and the next morning John and Diana set out on their flight home.

Things remain interesting …

Translator’s note: a few years ago, Andrea and Jürgen similarly played grand hosts for two of my siblings and me, descendants of grandmother Barbara
Dettling from the Black Sea area and of Johann Dettling of Salzstetten, plus our spouses. Andrea took us to several gorgeous destinations in the Gärtringen
area.
